My Acne Journey

June is Acne Awareness month! So, to commemorate, I wanted to share what I’ve learned through my journey of having acne as an adult.

In the United States, Acne is the most prevalent skin condition. While acne is most common in adolescents, it can also carry on into adulthood for many people.

Acne is not only physically painful, but can be emotionally distressing as well. As someone who has dealt with persistent acne for several years in their adulthood, I can attest to how much acne can affect self-esteem. For many people who struggle with acne, we feel ashamed and upset to have breakouts on our skin. It can especially be disheartening when you feel you have tried every trick and remedy you’ve heard of, and it still won’t go away.

Read on to find some tips to managing and living with acne – at the MedSpa and at home!

Medical -Grade Treatments for Acne

At Blume Skin & Body, we have three main treatments to help address all facets of acne.

  1. VI Chemical Peel

The VI Peel improves the tone, texture and clarity of the skin. There are 5 different formulations of the VI Peel to target different skin concerns. For someone with acne, the VI Peel Purify will help to kill off the bacteria that causes acne and in the next week, blemishes will dry up and flake off completely. The VI Peel Purify includes added Benzoyl Peroxide, Kojic Acid, and Hydrocortisone to target active breakouts in acne-prone skin. The VI Peel Purify with Precision Plus is an added booster to also address acne with hyperpigmentation and scarring.

VI Peel Process

VI Peel Process

  1. Forever Clear BBL

If you’re into skincare, you’ve probably heard of a Photofacial (or IPL/BBL), but you may not have heard of a BBL meant to treat acne. The Forever Clear BBL is unique to other Photofacials, and it uses a three-step process to combat acne. First, skin is treated with a blue light to eliminate acne-causing bacteria down in the pores. Then, the skin is treated with a yellow light to reduce inflammation and redness caused by acne. Lastly, the skin is treated with infra-red light to tighten skin and initiate the skin’s healing process.

Acne BBL Before and After Left Side Acne BBL Before and After Right Side

  1. Microneedling

Once the acne has been controlled and there are no more active breakouts, they may still be skin issues with tone and texture. Acne can leave behind stubborn scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (red marks left after acne is gone). Microneedling is a treatment that creates tiny, controlled micro-wounds in the skin which then triggers the skin’s natural healing process to heal over those scars.

Reminders for At-Home Care of Acne-Prone Skin

Quick Tips Acne (1)

The most important thing to remember with acne-prone skin is to have patience. Clearing your skin of acne can be a long road with ups and downs. This is because there could be several factors contributing to acne, including stress, hormones, diet, and many more. Addressing acne means addressing it from each angle, which requires a lot of patience!

It’s important to try and learn what your acne triggers are. Keeping a diary or notes in your phone about when you get breakouts can help you to determine whether your acne may be caused by hormonal changes, stress, environmental factors, or even certain foods. Dairy and sugar can be a trigger for acne in many people, so try cutting back on those to see if it improves the acne.

Other small habits that can add up over time would be avoiding touching your face, sleeping with your hair away from your face (if you have long hair), making sure to switch out your face towels and pillow cases frequently, and most importantly, not picking at your skin!

Finally, make sure to honor your esthetician’s work by consistently using the skincare regimen they recommend at home. Keep at it and don’t get discouraged! Progress may be slow, but every improvement should be celebrated. Each person’s acne and skin is so different, so what may work for one person may not work for you. It will take a bit of trial and error to find the solution to clear skin.

At the end of the day, acne is such a common condition and almost everyone has experienced it to some degree. We can love ourselves regardless if we have acne or not, and remember “perfect” skin does not exist – everyone gets blemishes and flaws and we don’t need to feel ashamed or embarrassed to talk about it! The Blume estheticians are here to help you contain and rid your face of blemishes – and they will do all that they can to get you the results you’re looking for, free of judgement.

If you’re ready to get clearer skin, call us and set up a consultation appointment today!

What does skin care product cocktailing mean?

So much skincare, how to choose the best concoction for your skin care concerns? With skincare cocktailing you can mix premium skin product brands to design the perfect skincare routine for you. What skincare products can I mix together safely? Here is a general rule of thumb with choosing skincare products according to specific skin types.

-Foaming Cleanser- is a great option for that “clean” feeling and preferably those with combination or oily skin.
-Lotion/Creamy Cleanser- gentle enough for all skin types and also a great makeup remover. Preferably those that have dry skin, sensitive skin, reactive skin and using topical prescriptions and retinol.
-Exfoliating Cleanser- not advised for active acne, or rosacea, but great for clogged pores and once weekly exfoliation.
-Antioxidant Serums- designed for brightening and free radical protection. Great for all skin types except acne.
-Hyaluronic Acid serum- perfect for everyone, even acne
-Growth Factor and Peptide Serums – excellent choice for antiaging and overall skin health
-Retinol- recommended to be advised by a medical aesthetician for dosing. Not recommended for pregnant woman, breastfeeding woman or taking Accutane.

Those were just a few standard skincare products to choose from. Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.

Your mom’s neighbor’s daughter is selling a multilevel marketing skincare line and you are interested in learning about the products because you have been on an uphill battle with your skin. This line seems simple, there’s a “kit” for acne, a “kit” for anti-aging, a “kit” for dry skin. Easy peasy pick a kit and abracadabra your skin is fixed! Not quite.

The pre-picked skincare kits sound great, with no thinking required. The trouble with this method is that not everyone can tolerate every product in an acne “kit” morning and night. Or the products in the anti-aging “kit”. Or any of the “kits”. Our skin is so complex. For example, there are a number of different varieties of acne. Hormone related, stress related, diet related, oil production, and so much more. It takes specific training and education to identify them. Along with aging skin, dry skin and sensitive skin.

For the majority of the population, a combination of these categories is typical. We need to take into consideration each individual’s skin type. Do they breakout still? Are they dry or oily? What’s their sensitivity level? Are they reactive? This must be done BEFORE anything else. A good skincare routine is necessary to protect your investment in any laser treatments, chemical peels or photofacial treatments.

For many, helping to erase and prevent fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation are the goal. Of course, skin care alone can’t turn back the clock, but skincare alongside good medical grade treatments can. But throwing them a cookie cutter anti-aging skincare “kit” isn’t always the answer. Is the individual oily? If they are, the products may be too heavy for them. Are they prone to breakouts? Perhaps this would lead to unwanted blemishes. Then we have to fix acne and aging. A fun combo. Your Medical Aesthetician and Certified Laser Technician can help guide you through the maze of choices.

Even treating acne can be tricky. A standard acne skincare “kit” can be extremely harmful to the skin. Typically, acne geared skincare can contain a combination of glycolic acid, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, lactic acid, physical exfoliants and retinol. These are all amazing ingredients to help fight acne, kill bacteria and prevent future breakouts. But when these are used every day, twice a day, your results will be the complete opposite of what you were trying to achieve.

The rule of thumb when cocktailing any skincare together is, if you are using any products that are drying, or that compromise the surface of the epidermis (retinol, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, etc.), you should be using a mild cleanser, a sunscreen and a denser moisturizer to balance out the dryness from the more aggressive products. Hyaluronic Acid is another amazing product to incorporate into your routine. Hyaluronic Acid is recommended for all skin types, especially acne. Using products that help to kill bacteria will leave the skin feeling dry and irritated. That’s when Hyaluronic can play a major role is deep hydration without adding heavy moisturizer.

5 Habits to Fabulous Skin:

The Instagram filter look can mess with our heads majorly. It projects an unachievable goal to not only young girls, but to grown adults too! While we are all trying to raise our daughters with lessons of self love, body positivity and plain old acceptance, there’s no denying we all STILL want to have awesome skin. But our mental health doesn’t have to suffer to get it. Here are 5 habits to get fabulous skin.

Moisturize

Now this may seem too simple, and it sort of is! Many individuals that have dealt with skin issues like acne, or oily skin typically skip this important step in fear of making things worse. It’s actually the complete opposite. When our skin isn’t properly hydrated it creates a thin dead layer of skin on the very surface of the epidermis. Sometimes you can see it and usually you can feel it. What happens is, that dead layer of skin creates such a barrier that your natural oil production is unable to secrete properly. Instead, it secretes slower than normal, creating a shine to the skin, giving the skin an oily appearance. That’s why many think they have oily skin. Since that oil secretion is moving so slowly, the oil can get stuck under the dead skin and form into deep clogged pores. Moisturizing on a regular basis can ease that dead skin helping to balance the entire function of the skin, including oil production.

The same applies to dry, combination and aging skin. Moisturizing is crucial for lubricating the pores, and feeding the skin what it needs. Fine lines and wrinkles will be less visible when they are properly hydrated. So finding a great moisturizer for night time is very important.

Epionce Renewal Facial Lotion

Sunblock

Now that we’ve covered the night time moisturizer portion, now we can cover the day time. Ah yes, SPF should be your BFF. Daily use of SPF is a great way to achieve fabulous skin. The best sunscreen to look for isn’t necessarily one that has a large SPF number on the front of the bottle. It’s actually the percentage of the active ingredients on the back of the bottle that give the sunscreen its protection power. High percentages of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are mineral ingredients that create a physical barrier from the sun. If you are using products that make you more photosensitive, like retinol or glycolic acid, or receiving treatments that make you more susceptible to burn or hyperpigmentation, SPF everyday is imperative.

EltaMD UV Shield Broad-Spectrum SPF 45

Retinol

Piggybacking from the importance of SPF, retinol is an amazing product to incorporate into your skincare routine. Retinol based products can come in all different shapes, sizes and potencies. Retinol or Retin-A is a derivative of Vitamin A. It helps with cellular turnover and helps to soften signs of aging (fine lines and wrinkles) and is a key component in helping with acne. It helps with skin texture, dilated pores and general skin wellness. Retinol use can be as simple as using it intermittently a few times a week, or spot treating acne blemishes. It is important to remember that you must limit your sun exposure during the time of use. For example, don’t use retinol the night before you know you’re going out on a hike, swimming, or any outdoor activity the following day. And when you do go out, make sure the retinol has been cleansed off the following day and a proper SPF has been applied.

Neocutis Nouvelle+ Retinol

Serum

So many serums, how do I know which one is best?! That all depends on what your skin is doing at the moment and your goals. Hyaluronic acid, antioxidant, peptide, and growth factor serums all have so many amazing benefits. So to pick the best one for you leads me into the next must-have for fabulous skin.

Medical Esthetician

Establishing a good relationship with a highly trained, knowledgable Medical Esthetican will guarantee the right path for you on your skincare journey. Which serum to invest in, and which treatments you should dedicate your time on maintaining your fabulous skin. Whether is laser, facials, microneedling, peels or microdermabrasions, your esthetician will establish a treatment regimen to fit your needs completely.

Living in a highly virtual world where the filters are at our fingertips, it’s important to remember the true beauty within us. True beauty can’t be seen in a mirror or a computer screen or a phone. We were all born to be real, real people with real flaws. Perfection is such an illusion that we continuously have to remind ourselves of. Luckily the support from trusted professionals can help keep your true beauty shining through.

NewBeauty Awards 2021

Spring is the season of rebirth and the award season. Of course, the testing process for the 2021 NewBeauty Awards during wasn’t the typical testing committees debating over 10,000 submissions.  This year all research and debate to choose the 280 winners was done virtually.  I can image that the panel was hyper-critical of their own image on the zoom meetings. The experts scrutinized thousands of products and procedures that deliver on their claims and solve our biggest beauty requests. This year more than ever we deserve to look and feel like the best versions of ourselves.

Each year hundreds of new product lines enter the skin care and treatment market. Instagram & Facebook bombard us with new advertising for products that are brand new and untested. Tik Tok has also entered the fray of so-called experts telling its viewers to use strange and unusual homemade remedies to cure all your beauty woes.  Unfortunately, once you click on the advertisement, you will see the product show up in your news feed for weeks.

I thought it would be helpful to highlight the 11th Annual Beauty Awards from New Beauty Magazine, Spring-Summer 2021, with the products and procedures that Blume Skin & Body offers.

NewBeauty Awards for Best In-Office Treatments & Procedures

Face Mask Acne is Now a Thing

How to prevent “Maskne” this summer.

Wearing face masks are now mandatory and essential to keeping us safe in public. I have noticed several skin issues that have arisen due to the wearing of masks. Wearing a face mask for extended periods of time can lead to several unsightly skin problems.

Especially during the summer heat, excessive sweat and bacterial build up between the mask and your skin. This can lead to clogged pores, acne breakouts and increased vascularity or redness with bumps. The masks can occlude the skin and prevent the release of heat that creates your own humidity, which causes dull irritated skin. Masks also provide the perfect environment for bacteria to grow, which can lead to irritation and breakouts. Your normal skin care routine; cleansing, exfoliation, moisturizing and sunblock help the natural shedding process of dead skin and also protects the skin barrier. Wearing a face mask can interfere with the shedding process. Those dead skin cells are trapped in your pores and create a buildup of sebum and bacteria which creates problems. If you are prone to eczema or rosacea, these irritations may trigger your symptoms.

What can you do?

1. Most important is to clean your face often throughout the day when you are wearing a face mask. On the go cleansing cloths are great, Colorescience hydrating cleansing cloths are easy and effective, also ZO Skin Health Complexion Pads and Oil Controlling Pads are both amazing for instant quick cleaning.
2. Don’t skip the exfoliation process, super important with mask wearing. You may use a physical scrub like Valmont Face Exfoliator, ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Polish or Dual Action Scrub. All three are excellent to use in the shower after cleansing your skin to assist in deep cleaning. Another option for exfoliation is chemical exfoliators for nighttime use, try Epionce Lytic TX, ZO Skin Health Enzymatic Peel or NeoCutis Nouvelle Retinol. These exfoliation steps will aid in the removal of dead skin cells, dirt debris and bacteria that can clog pores. Please don’t forget to wear sunscreen daily to protect your skin barrier.
3. Try to avoid wearing makeup on your lower face and focus on your eyes instead. Don’t forget a good lip balm, the lips are in constant contact with the mask and tend to dry out.
4. Take care of yourself with a skin treatment for deep pore cleansing, extra exfoliation and overall skin pampering. Blume Skin & Body has several COVID-19 rescue skin treatments to choose from. My favorites are: ZO Skin Health 5 in 1 Super Facial, HydraFacial and OxyGeneo. All three of these skin treatments will exfoliate, purify, hydrate and promote oxygen to rescue the skin. Blume Skin & Body is a medical skin care center with the strictest sanitation protocols. The safety of our patients and staff is our top priority.

What type of mask is best?
1. Cotton face masks are the best for your skin. Light and breathable, think of your favorite T-Shirt. The mask should be 2-3 layers and cover your nose and mouth to be effective.
2. Wash your mask. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends washing your mask after every use. It is recommended to have several masks to rotate so you always have a clean mask to wear. It is best to wash your masks in gentle detergent that is fragrance free to reduce the chance of an allergic irritation.

Rosacea. What is it? Why does it happen? What is the best way to treat it? Unfortunately, rosacea affects an estimated 16 million Americans. It is chronic, but treatable and will worsen over time if it is left untreated. Fortunately, there are several avenues people can go to for relief. There are topical skin treatments, laser treatments, microneedling and lifestyle changes.

Rosacea (roh-ZAY-sha) is a common skin condition that causes visible blood vessels and redness in your face. It can also be combined with small, red, pus-filled bumps. It is common for the signs and symptoms to last several weeks to months and then disappear for a while. People who struggle with this condition also have a tendency to blush or flush more easily than other people. This redness is most commonly on the nose and cheeks, forehead and chin. However, it can spread to the ears, chest and back. According to the National Rosacea Society, “Studies have shown that over time the redness tends to become ruddier and more persistent, and visible blood vessels may appear. Left untreated, inflammatory bumps and pimples often develop, and in severe cases – particularly in men – the nose may grow swollen and bumpy from excess tissue.” There are several signs and symptoms of rosacea. The first category is diagnostic signs, persistent redness and skin thickening. The second category are major signs of rosacea, which are flushing, bumps and pimples, visible blood vessels and eye irritation. The third category is secondary signs and symptoms, which may appear with one or more of the diagnostic or major signs. These are burning or stinging sensations on the face, swelling or dryness.

Treatment for rosacea varies from individual to individual. Blume Skin & Body has some tried and true ways to help with rosacea. The first is an IPL/BBL Photofacial treatment. The light energy delivered by this BBL treatment gently heats the upper layers of your skin, which stimulates your skin cells to regenerate. This treatment is tailored to match your skin type and desired results. The IPL/BBL encourages the growth of collagen to replace damaged skin and heal skin conditions. The conditions that may be helped with regular treatments are acne, rosacea, pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. How does the BBL/IPL laser affect Rosacea? It breaks up the vessels and building collagen. It is important to note that each patient is different and will respond differently so it is important to receive a complimentary consultation with Blume Skin & Body before any treatment. The BBL/IPL laser will not cure rosacea, but the symptoms can be managed with consistent treatments. It is best to have a series of three to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart. From there you can determine how often you need to return for maintenance treatments. Remember, rosacea is chronic and uncurable. It is best to find a maintenance plan that works for you and stick with it.

Finding a skin care routine is also an important part of managing rosacea. If you have rosacea you should be using a mild or gentle cleanser twice a day. We really like the Gentle Foaming Cleanser from Epionce, the Gentle Cleanser from ZO Skin Health or the Wonder Falls from Valmont. These cleansers will gently cleanse the skin without any harsh irritants. Always use lukewarm water and blot your face dry. Never use a rough washcloth or pull or tug on your skin. If you have rosacea you should never use scrubs or any exfoliants. The next step in your routine would be a serum to help reduce the appearance of redness. Our favorites are the DNA Repair Serum from Valmont or Rozatrol from ZO Skin Health. Both of these products will help protect the skin and boost collagen production.

I have extremely sensitive skin mixed with acne – it’s horrible! I need to use “acne” products, but sometimes they hurt and burn. I go through a crazy cycle with my skin care products. I try to use strong acne lines, get frustrated with my sensitive skin, then stop using them and try organic/natural products. The organic/natural products do absolutely nothing for my skin. If anything it makes my skin worst – more acne, darker and duller.

One product that I love is Neocutis Nouvelle + Retinol Correction Cream. It’s like a magic potion! I put it on at night and wake up glowing the next morning. It controls and decreases my acne, makes my pores smaller, and minimizes my dark spots. I’m half Asian so dark spots are a continuous issue I fight. The cream helps brighten, smooth and reverses aging. I’m only in my early thirties, but but this is the time to start thinking and acting on wrinkle prevention.

Again, I love this product, but noticed my skin was getting dry and flakey. My face and neck also started to get itchy in the morning after working-out and sweating. With the advice from Blume Skin & Body, I started to decrease the amount and frequency to work my skin up to it. In addition, a staff member recommended the Epionce Renewal Calming Cream, a new product:

Renewal Calming Cream is clinically proven to relieve the symptoms of eczema, including itching, redness and dryness. Formulated with cholesterol and ceramides to help protect the skin barrier, Renewal Calming Cream hydrates and repairs extremely dry, sensitive skin.  Optimal for skin that is resistant to sensitizers and preservatives found in standard moisturizers.

All I have to say is this was a game changer. I started using the renewal calming cream on top of my Necotuis Nouvelle and the results have been amazing. I use both products every night and I wake up with no sensitivity. The retinol is reversing my aging and preventing acne while the cream is hydrating and repairing my skin.

How many times have we heard that…honestly, it really works! I recently had that experience and must say, it really works! I am gushing over the Jane Iredale Magic Mitt. What looks like a simple peach-colored piece of cloth is a miracle worker. The packaging simply states, “Magic Mitt- Quickly and completely removes makeup using NO cleanser. Magic Mitt will even remove mascara”. A victim of residual “raccoon eyes” after washing my face, I thought I would give it a try. And I must say, I am a believer! Only using water, I cleansed my face and had absolutely no residual mascara. Just to be sure, I then took a tissue and gently wiped it under my eyes and amazingly the tissue was clean. And an added bonus was my skin felt completely clean without feeling tight. This little gem is $15.00- a small investment with huge results!

Those of us who live in Arizona have a Love-Hate relationship with the sun. Love the warm pool weather. Love having the breeze from open windows in the evening. Love the bright, airy clothing and flip flops. However, we hate the damage the sun does to our skin. Hate the wrinkles we get from squinting when it gets too bright out. Hate the dark mascara circles we get under our eyes after a lazy day swimming.

Whether we love or hate the heat, it is a simple fact for us Arizona dwellers. Many of us wonder what are the best skincare products for summer use? What should I use for extremely dry skin? How do I get rid of oily skin? What are my skin treatment options? The answers to many of these questions are as simple as scheduling a consultation with our Medical Aesthetician, Sandra Caldwell. With years of experience, Sandra will educate you in depth on the benefits of facial rejuvenation treatments for healthy, glowing summer skin. A simple switch to cleansers for oily skin. A rich nourishing moisturizer for itchy dry skin. Sensitive skin? Sandra has the answers and can recommend products from our wide variety of lines- PCA, AVENE, Neocutis, iS Clinical, Jane Iredale Mineral Makeup, Advanced Mineral Makeup, and many more.

Take the time to learn about summer skincare options. The heat is on.
